Step 1 : Understanding Visa type
There are number of non-immigrant visas. You must first understand which type of visa you require and whether you’re qualified for the same or not. Generally, people planning to visit US temporarily for few days for some specific purpose are eligible for non-immigrant visa. Some examples are tourists, students, business people, journalist etc.

Step 2 : Fill up DS-160 form online
The next step involves filling up DS-160 form online. This is called Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application Form. It has to be filled only online. No handwritten or typed application are allowed.
Collect all your information before starting filling-up your form like your passport, your educational and professional records, your previously visited details to US, if any, Travel itinerary etc.
a) You MUST complete the form in 20 minutes of time. After that session will expire, and you need to fill up the form again. So, when you start filling up online form, note down Application ID given on top-right side of page. You’ll need this ID to continue your incomplete application form.
b) You can not make any changes to the form once it is submitted. So, fill up every column very carefully and accurate.
c) Call Centre of US embassy will not help you in filling up the form. If you’ve any problems in filling up the form, consult professional visa experts.
d) Every member (including children) should submit individual DS-160 form. Note down you DS-160 barcode number after successfully submitting application number. You’ll need it to apply for interview at Embassy.
e) Take the printout of the confirmation page. You must bring it at the time of interview.
f) The form must be completed in English language only.

Step 3 : Pay Visa Fees
Once you complete your DS-160 form, the next step is to pay your VISA fees. You may pay VISA fees online using NEFT, IMPS (Mobile payment) or cash in AXIS, Citibank or DRUK bank.

The form is simple to fill-up and self-explanatory.
Step 4 : Schedule Appointment
Once you make your online profile, and make payment for US visa, the next step is to login to your profile at https://cgifederal.secure.force.com/?language=English&country=India
Once, you enter, click on “Schedule Appointment” link on the left-hand side menu.
You must schedule two appointments, one for the Visa Application Center (VAC) and one for the visa interview at the Embassy or Consulate. First, schedule your visa interview appointment at the Embassy or Consulate. Second, schedule your appointment at an Visa Application Centre. This appointment will allow you to go to one of the five Visa Application Centre locations to have your fingerprints and photo taken. This appointment must be at least 1 day before your visa interview appointment at the Embassy or Consulate.
To schedule your appointment, you’ll need
- Your passport number
- The visa application fee receipt number.
- The ten (10) digit barcode number from your DS-160 confirmation page
As you go through the process you will be able to select your visa type, enter personal data, add dependents, select your document delivery location, confirm visa payment, and schedule your appointment.
Step 5 : Visit to the Visa Application Centre
For your Visa Application Centre appointment, you will need to bring:
- A passport valid for travel to the United States with validity dates at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States
- Your DS-160 confirmation page.
- Your appointment confirmation page.
- One photograph as per U.S. visa specifications if the applicant is under 14 years of age . See the Photos and Fingerprints page for more details.
Step 6 : Visit to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate
The next step is to visit the U.S. Embassy or Consulate on the date and time of your visa interview. You will need to bring:
- A printed copy of your appointment confirmation letter,
- Your DS-160 confirmation page stamped at the VAC
- Your current and all old passports,
- Supporting Documents as per your visa type
Note: Children under 14 years of age are not required to attend the appointment at the Visa Application Centre or visa interview at the Embassy/Consulate. Accompany/Guardians/Parents can carry the above documents.
