  1. To avoid commissions and funds with loads and high expenses,
I would suggest the following fund companies for their low cost.
Fidelity, Vanguard, American Century and TR Price.
They have a cost of less than 1% in most of their funds.

  2. I think you are talking about investing in mutual funds as against directly in individual stocks. If you are new to investing in equities, I would recommend sticking to mutual funds, as you’ll enjoy the twin benefits of a) the expertise of a fund manager and b) minimization of risk through diversification (when you invest in a mutual fund, you are in effect investing in all the companies that the fund manager has chosen to comprise the fund).

When choosing a fund to invest in be sure to look at a) the performance of the fund when the market was looking up, b) the performance of the fund when the market was looking down. If you’re satisfied with a) and b), check to see whether the fund manager responsible for the good performance past, is still managing the fund.

Finally, I would recommend that you start by investing in some large-cap (blue-chip) diversified funds, and don’t get into more than two or three, since there aren’t that many good ones.

To answer your question about commissions (loads), there is now no entry load when investing in a mutual fund, and no exit load unless you exit the fund within 6 months of buying in (in which case the exit load would be 1% of the invested capital).

Hope this answers your question. If not, send me an e-mail, and I’ll be glad to help you further
