How much is the tax on Long term capital gain (especially gain from mutual funds)? Is there any way to minimize this tax?

Agents come with a number of forms to fill up for policies. They give a lump sum amount to the doctor irrespective of the test undertaken. While other insurance companies have a policy to pay the amount to the doctor concerned in their account directly, LIC give a chance to the agents to grab the doctors money.
Further I have also to buy a bigger flat by the sale proceed + new loan. Will I get long term capital gain benefit. The present flat is more than 36 months old.
I intend to sell my 15 years old built up house and wish to purchase two residential built up flats from the sale proceeds which should be almost for the same amount. Would I have to pay any long term capital gain tax?

5. long term capital gain/ tax free for more than one year where STT is paid
6. exempted income such as intrest free on PPF etc
