  1. Hi, you can take my portfolio as an example, being a 28yo as well. At our age, you want about 90% in stocks, 10% in bonds. I have gone a bit further and diversified into other asset classes, such as commodities. They can hedge against poor equity returns or losses.

Vanguard Total Stock Market Index (VTSMX) – 20%
    Vanguard Small-Cap Index (NAESX) – 20%
Vanguard European Stock Index (VEURX) – 5%
Vanguard Emerging Markets Index (VEIEX) – 10%
    Vanguard Short-term Bond Index (VFSTX) – 10%
    Vanguard High-Yield Corporates Fund (VWEHX) – 5%
    Vanguard Inflation-Protected Securities Fund (VIPSX) – 10%
Vanguard REIT Index (VGSIX) – 5%
Vanguard Precious Metals Fund (VGPMX) – 10%
    Cash – 5%

The breakdown is a little more complex and I take on more risk than some may want. A more basic breakdown would be something like 45% Vanguard Total Stock, 45% Vanguard Small-Cap, 10% into bonds. You can mix in more things from there if you like, if you think other things will help. It is really about how much risk you want. If you want less risk, stick with US equities and only higher grade bonds. If you want to accept more risk, add in high-yield bonds and foreign equities.

Btw, all of these are Vanguard and mostly passive indexes. That means they will have minimal management fees and basically track the overall markets. I chose Vanguard because they are low-fee and very reliable.

  2. EQUITY-Oriented schemes.-60%

    ICICI focused bluechip fund (G)
    SBI magnum comma fund(G)
    Kotak Select Focus fund (G)
    Reliance Regular Saving fund(G)

Kotak Gold ETF/SBI Gold ETF -10%
    Tata/ICICI pru/SBI Magnum Balanced Fund- 30 %

  3. Listen to Devin. Vanguard mutual funds are the best of the breed. They don’t try to predict the future. Compared to the others, they look boring. If you want excitement, go to a casino.
