Is it necessary to get an inherited house registered in your name before selling it?

My parents made a will that leaves their house to me. I want to sell it. Now, how should I proceed? Can the house be sold on the strength of ‘will’ alone or do I have get it registered in my name. That would cost unnecessary expenses in terms of time and money.

People with knowledge about Indian property and inheritance laws, please guide me.

Thanks in advance.

  1. If you are the executor of the estate, you can sell it and the proceeds go into the estate. If you are not, you need to get it in your name prior to sale.

If the house is paid off, it would be quite simple and not that expensive to get the deed in your name.
