If a house is jointly purchased by a couple, will both get tax benefit?

If husband and wife are joint owner of a flat/house, will they both get income tax benefit on home loan/principal repayment? What will be the amount of tax deduction per year for each of them? will it be half of total tax rebate (as per income tax rule in India)?

  1. I think the total principal amount( without any ceiling limit) paid during the financial year and the total interest paid with ceiling limit of150000 may get tax exemption. This may availed by any one by furnishing a letter obtained from the employer of other one to the effect that he/she has not availed this concession.

  2. Only adding name in property deed of any one does not itself make it eligible for income tax benifits. There must be share of true ownership of both the person. If this is Ok then you can claim income tax benfits 1/2 by each co owner.
