I and my wife jointly owns a house. But the interest payment is from my income. Is the dedn avbl to me alone?

Who can claim deduction U/s 24 (1) (vi) ? My wife does not contibute for repayment of loan and repayment is done only from my income. But since the property is in joint name, her name is also included in the loan papers with the Bank. Can I claim deduction for the entire amount of Interest?

  1. since u are paying the instalments you can claim rebate us 24 and not your wife. the logic is simpel she does not pay anything from her account and hence cannot claim any rebates at all.

  2. “You” may claim for the entire amount of interest and Principal but if your wife is not paying anything from her account, then she certainly cannot claim.

  3. Dear sir,

The logic is very simple to claim LOss of house property is that all the expenses incurred to earn any income will be allowed as dedcution.

IN your case the house is self occupied hence the income is nil but you are paying interest on that house hence you can claim the rebate from your other taxable income.
